The Pharmacy (30th. Anniversary Edition) - FoodShelterAndClothing

Mapping the history of The Pharmacy without telling you what the song is about….

T’was 30 years ago…

The original 1995 version was quite a magical moment for the band. We were a quartet then with a human drummer (i.e. Eugene) when we wrote, and recorded it in a lighting fast session. I know, it’s quite corny whenever you hear someone said that a particular song just came out of the ether and somehow the pieces just fell into place. Well, this one fits the cornball bill. I supposed, us being a tight unit then just connected at a subconscious level and came up with the song on the spot whilst jamming organically, which is a cliché in itself. What came out was a new wave/ post punk inspired ditty created amidst the full on mainstream explosion of post grunge (Cobain died a year before remember?). Not surprisingly, this version always brings back  fond memories of simpler times, and our trusty 4 track cassette recorder.

Rewind to 20 years ago…

The 2005 version was created out of necessity of some sort, as we were invited (thank you Jasper) to do a live gig for the now defunct Fiestamundo music web portal here in Bacolod. Back then, it’s just me, and Jem (Chris was in Japan at that time) who crammed, and he did all the bass parts (both the rhythm, and distorted lead), and programmed/ sequenced all the tracks on a Boss DR5 drum machine/ sequencer. While me, for the first time in our band’s history, recorded said stuff to a PC. Yes, it was only in 2005 that we got to use a computer for music production! But even then, we have to pre-record all the digital instruments in the Boss machine, before transferring them in real time to the PC. Only the vocals, and additional live instruments, like Jem’s bass parts, vocals, sound FX, and live percussions were overdubbed to the PC. Sorry for being nerdy here. I just re-listened to it a few weeks ago, and I was surprised that it was actually way faster, and longer, than the original. Anyhow, what came out of it was still a post punk piece, with  maybe a dash of mid-period Psychedelic Furs.

Fast forward to now….

I decided to make a  gritty, grimey, and filthy-sounding version akin to our current social climate, and landscape. A more in-your-face, and quite chaotic arrangement perfect for the ADHD set. I supposed this is a more electro-punk/ garage rock  leaning version which I’ve always wanted to get back to. An abrasive, and rough piece that don’t sound like it was made on a sleek computer is always a fun challenge for Gen X folks like me these days. The kinetic beat is a nod to early industrial pioneers Cabaret Voltaire, and late 80's, early 90's sampledelia mavericks Meat Beat Manifesto, while consciously trying to make it sound like a demo tape (with unedited mistakes!) recorded on a 4 track recorder as mentioned previously.  Thus, I think this is a fitting piece to commemorate the song’s 30th anniversary. Now, if you think what the 40th anniversary version will sound like? I think it will be an unplugged piece with just an old acoustic guitar, and a kerosene lamp. Until then, crank this fucker to smithereens!

Cobalt Blue (Maxi Single) by FoodShelterAndClothing

We always wanted to do an homage to some of our favorite musical genres that help shaped our tastes in the 90's. In this particular instance, Jamaican dub which is adjacent to Bristolian Trip Hop. Some Meat Beat Manifesto electronics. Add a dash of Dinosaur Jr., and Sonic Youth guitars, UK Big Beat, Us era Peter Gabriel, and bits of the Velvets which was a constant in our songwriting tool box. As for the lyrics, Jem wrote it, hence he sung it ( that's our band rule, you write it, you sing it!). So I have no idea what it's about, but I'm sure it's quite profound since he sung it in the style of Paul Buchanan (Blue Nile), and not Mark Greenway (Napalm Death). As for the synthpop version, it's just something we like to dance to at any given moment. Don't worry about it. Now, please don't ask me about the color coordinated instrumental tracks. It might take a book, and a film documentary to explain their entire meaning. I'm kidding, it's just bits and bobs, sketches of ideas that served as rough drafts to our next round of songs which will be out in the next few months. Until then, stay cool, eat well, and keep your life open to new experiences.

Caught On Cassette II (1993-1998) - FoodShelterAndClothing

Officially, this is the second compilation album culled from cassette recordings by the band. The first one being Analogue Whores, also a double album released in 2010. That said, this one I consider as more eclectic (which is our middle name), more esoteric in parts, more loosey goosey, and definitely more fucked up! It serves as a weird glimpse into our creative process. Do expect some bum notes, bad timing, and out-of-tune vocals. It's warts, and all! Most were eventually polished, and re-recorded. While some ended up here in its purest form. Apparently, the 90’s was a prolific time for us. I supposed the lack of internet, smart phones, social media, real jobs, and all the digital distractions we have now left us with nothing but to pursue our shit relentlessly, and without expecting any financial rewards. It was all in the name of FUN! Coming up with a deluge of ideas, that the only thing that hindered us was perhaps the primitive technology we have back then. C’mon, the decade gave us grunge, alt-rock, Britpop, gangsta rap, Madchester, all kinds of metal, boy-fucking-bands, Spice-fucking-Girls, and electronica with all it’s countless sub-genres! Though I'm proud to say that we really never got into the local band scene then, mainly because it wasn't really our thing. Though we were able to get on MTV Asia's Out-of-the-Box segment in 1997, which was a pleasant experience. Needless to say, the decade was a cesspool of creativity bursting at the seams! I’m just glad we were in the middle of all that, and more! Personally, these songs no matter how primitive-sounding they are, gave me a new sense of rejuvenation which every 50 plus year old muthafucka needs at this point in time. Of course, the feeling of nostalgia is quite overwhelming, but so is the rush of inspiration for future projects. In fact, while writing this piece, my mind is already racing, lights blinking, alarms going off everywhere! Until the next compilation (yes, there are still a few more old tracks in the proverbial vault), may this one entertain, and inspire you as it did us.
Cheers to the future!

POST SCRIPT

And just in case you're wondering what happened after 1998...,
a year later, we were commissioned by comicbook author Jason Banico to produced a soundtrack for his ouvre, Baylans. This was released through Alamat (better known now as the company that gave us Trese). In the early 2000's, we released Excuse Us For Living, which we deemed to be our final album. Along with it was Cracked EP, our first, and only nationally distributed CD released through Triad Records. We also did a one off gig in 2005 for the now defunct Fiestamundo music site. After which we decided to release nothing but a series of Maxi singles, remixes, and EP's throughout the 00's. Notable too were our metal projects headed by Jem, namely Full Time Bigot, and FuckTheFuckingFuckers
In the following decade, we did a full-length soundtrack to the student film adaptation of Trese, the comicbook. This was years before the Netflix animated series.
A slew of singles, and compilation albums also followed suit.
This also included what can be considered as the first (by a Pinoy act) digital box set of remixes by various local producers, and musicians dubbed as ReCreation
Which now brings us to the early part of the 2020's.
We resurrected an old Bottles track (The Pick),
under the Breaking The Bottles Project moniker.
We had a nice streaming deal with Synthicide
and released the Reprise EPa compilation of old,
and new remixes for the selfie generation.
This year we released our most recent maxi single Junkified
and currently planning to produce more tracks in the coming years.
And so the beat goes on..., and on.
Or at least until we decide to just give up trying.

This album is dedicated to everyone who’s been part of the band since 1987: Erik, John, Giovanni, Ian, Pong (RIP), Rolin (RIP), Ramon 1, Ramon 2, Bimboy, Jodel, Jacel, Kenneth, Stanley, Pancho, my sincerest apologies to anyone I forgot to mention (It’s been a long while, I’m a fucking old man, and it’s hard to keep up with all you lovely humans coming in and out of the band!), and of course to everyone who supported us as all those years ago, and those who kept on asking about releasing our old shit in spite of the fact that most of our old recordings were long gone into the abyss. Thank heavens that I got to salvage some of these tapes (expect to hear ‘em old muddy sound quality). To James, Ariel, and to y’all listening to these songs, my love and respect!
